Club History…Walking the Garden Path

In 1972 a small group of women gathered in their homes to improve the landscape of Old Mill Grove in Lake Zurich. In June 1973 they joined with interested residents and began their first formal meeting with Carol Baker as President. They presented informative speakers at the meetings. Application for membership in to the Garden Clubs of Illinois was made on July 8, 1974 with a total of 23 members and so began the “Garden Club Of Lake Zurich”.

To fund their activities and pay for speakers, they held garage sales, bake and craft sales, plus hanging basket and Christmas wreath sales. In 1975 their first standard placement show “Country Charm” was held and the next year a standard flower show “This Land is Your Land” commemorating the Nation’s Bicentennial was held. Over the years, fundraising events have continued to center around plant sales.

In 1982, the club grew too large to meet in members’ homes, so they met at the Ela Township Sr. Citizens’ Center next to the Village’s Historic Ela Town Hall. In 1999 the club moved with the Center to the Foglia YMCA in Hawthorn Wds. In 2007 the club once again moved to St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church where it presently meets each month. The club’s activities are not limited to meetings. We’ve taken many excursions and visited numerous Botanical Gardens and Nurseries in and around the State.

Also in 1982, the Ela Library (at its original sight on Bueching Rd)sought public participation in landscaping the grounds. Spearheaded by the garden clubs of Lake Zurich and Long Grove-Kildeer plus other groups, funds and donations reached $12,000. With design input from Gloria Heramb (a former President and prominent figure in the LZ Garden Club) a landscape plan was put into place with the labor of all garden club members and their families.

Since that time the LZ Garden Club has continued to maintain the library gardens at their new expansive location (Rte 22 & Old Rand Rd). In memory of Gloria’s work a memorial plaque is placed in the garden for all to see.

The Club has since taken on two more library beds (totaling a lengthy portion of the library’s grounds) just south of its entrance. The library gardens are a frequent source of pride and positive comments by patrons and a major community activity for the Club and others to enjoy.
