1. Edward G. Whiston
Edward G. Whiston, age 74, of Destin, Fla., passed away Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Whiston had moved and retired in Destin in 1990 from a position with Cook County, Ill., as chief traffic engineer.
Ed was a member of the Army Air Force's 93rd Bomb Group and served as a second lieutenant navigator aboard B-17s during World War II. He was shot down in 1944 over Germany, captured and interned as a POW for nine months before escaping to friendly lines as the war drew to a close.
Mr. Whiston served his community and friends admirably well as a board member of the local MPO and Tourist Trade Commission, a committee member of Destin's Airport Committee, Public Works Committee, and a member of St. Vincent DePaul's Group, as well as an usher at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Destin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Whiston and Mrs. Rose (Larney) Whiston; stepfather, William Sullivan; brother, William "Bud" Whiston; and sister, "Bee" Sheedy, all of Illinois.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Whiston of Destin; sons and their wives, Timothy and Kathy, Brian and Debbie, and Dennis and Gerry Whiston; daughter and husband, Noreen and Jim Reese; stepdaughter, Tricia Pappas; stepson, Keith Meisner; nine grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild; and sister, Mary Hennessy, all of Illinois.
Memorial services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Beach Drive, Destin. Interment will be in Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Fla.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Vincent DePaul's Group of Corpus Christi Catholic Church.
